RDP Athletics weekend recap: Nov. 29-Dec. 1

This past week, the RDP Kings and Queens completed their final regular season games of 2024.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball squad defeated the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings and NAIT Ooks. The Kings Basketball team dropped its two road contests.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team earned a victory over the Olds College Broncos. The RDP Kings Hockey team downed the Portage College Voyageurs twice at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Both first place RDP Volleyball teams defeated the Vikings and Ooks at home.

Basketball

RDP Queens at University of Alberta Augustana | Friday, November 29

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team earned a 74-57 victory over the fifth seed University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (2-8). Rachel Harvey led the Queens with 20 points. Both Mia Cunningham (Bachelor of Business Administration) and Brandi Thibeaux (Bachelor of Business Administration) added 10 points.

Queens at NAIT | Saturday, November 30

The second place RDP Queens (7-2) downed the fourth place NAIT Ooks (3-7) by 16 points (66-50). The Queens shot 48.1 per cent from the field.

RDP Kings at U of A Augustana Vikings | Friday, November 29

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team dropped a 96-87 decision to the fifth place University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (2-8) in Camrose. Zayne Vernon, a first-year guard from Hamilton, powered the Kings’ offence with 19 points.

Kings at NAIT | Saturday, November 30

The ACAC South Division’s third place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (5-4) were downed 92-73 by the North Division’s third seed NAIT Ooks (6-4) in Edmonton. Jose Mauro (Business Certificate) accumulated 16 points and nine rebounds for RDP. The Kings shot 92.9 per cent from the free-throw line.

Hockey

Queens vs Broncos | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, November 30

The third place RDP Queens Hockey team (8W-4L-1 OTL) defeated the fourth seed Olds College Broncos (3W-8L-1 OTL) by a pair of goals (4-2). Emily Hourie (Bachelor of Kinesiology) and Camryn Ward (Bachelor of Kinesiology) scored singles for the Queens. Valleyview’s Jailyn Bablitz added two goals for the Polytechnic. Goaltender Izzy Palumbo made 23 saves (0.920) in the Queens’ net.

Kings vs Voyageurs | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, November 29

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team earned a 7-3 victory over the Portage College Voyageurs. Nolan Doell recorded a hat trick for RDP. Liam Stalwick, a Kings third-year defender, had a pair of goals. Holden Knights (Business Certificate) and Sean Michalevich (Business Administration – General Management) added singles for the Polytechnic. Kristian Lyon made 26 saves (0.900) in the Kings’ net.

RDP Kings vs Voyageurs | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, November 30

The third seed Kings (7W-4L-1 OTL) toppled the seventh place Voyageurs (2W-10L-0 OTL) by three (5-2). Clay Sleeva had a pair of goals for RDP. Ryland McNinch (Bachelor of Education Secondary Years), Alex Bernauer (Business Diploma) and Nathan DeGraves (Open Studies) also scored for the Kings.

Volleyball

Queens vs Vikings | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, November 29

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball team captured the match against the fifth place University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (4-5) in three sets (25-16, 25-18 and 25-20). Red Deer’s Lauren Junck sparked the Polytechnic’s offence, contributing 12 kills.

RDP Queens vs NAIT | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, November 30

The first place Queens (7-2) swept the fourth seed NAIT Ooks (6-3) by scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-16. RDP setter Maria Brouwer stacked up 23 assists.

Kings vs Vikings | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, November 29

The first place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team defeated the sixth seed U of A Augustana Vikings (1-8) in three sets (25-21, 25-20 and 25-16). Colby Nemeth (14 kills) and Brett Lower (13 kills) led the Kings’ offence.

Kings vs Ooks | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, November 30

The RDP Kings Volleyball team (9-0) defeated the third place NAIT Ooks (5-4) in five sets (22-25, 28-30, 25- 23, 31-29 and 17-15) to remain unbeaten. Nemeth had 18 kills. Setters Brett Theise (20 assists) and Drew Dykstra (29 assists) combined for 49 assists.

The RDP Kings and Queens will resume regular season competition in January 2025.
