Stay of proceedings in Wetaskiwin stabbing incidents

Dec 2, 2024 | 4:49 PM

There has been a stay of proceedings for a central Alberta man charged in multiple stabbings in Wetaskiwin last year.

Sandy Brown, 33, a resident of Maskwacis, had his matters stayed in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on Nov. 28, 2024.

According to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS), the Crown prosecutor assessed all the available evidence in the matter but due to the unavailability of key witnesses, it was determined there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction.

Brown was scheduled for trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice from Nov. 28-29, 2024, after previously being scheduled for trial from Dec. 21-22, 2023.

It was on Jan. 11, 2023, at approximately 9:00 p.m., when Wetaskiwin RCMP say they responded to a report of a stabbing in Wetaskiwin.

When RCMP and EMS arrived on scene, they located one male with stab wounds.

Several minutes later, RCMP received a report of a second stabbing incident in Wetaskiwin. When Mounties arrived, two additional victims were located. Police confirm both victims were transported to hospital with serious injuries and were expected to recover. After an investigation, it was determined that both incidents were related.

As a result of the investigation, RCMP charged the suspect with:

  • Aggravated assault (x2)
  • Failing to comply with release conditions.
