Red Deer RCMP warns of rise in sextortion scams

Nov 29, 2024 | 12:01 PM

The Red Deer RCMP says there’s a growing threat of local sextortion scams.

Sextortion is a form of online blackmail where offenders get victims to send explicit images/videos before demanding payment with a threat of public exposure.

“Sextortion is a serious crime that preys on fear and shame,” said Cst. Cory Riggs, Red Deer RCMP spokesperson.

“We want everyone to know that help is available, and victims should never feel afraid to come forward. Our priority is your safety.”

Police say these situations often start innocently with someone befriending the victim on social media, dating apps, or gaming platforms before they’re coerced into sharing intimate content.

Tips to protect yourself:

  • Verify before connecting. Be skeptical of strangers who quickly want to move conversations to private platforms, or seem, “too good to be true.”
  • Be cautious about sharing personal information online. Avoid sharing explicit images or sensitive details about yourself.
  • Keep social media accounts private. Limit what information you share publicly and review your privacy settings regularly.
  • Do not engage. If someone starts demanding payment block and report them immediately.
  • Speak openly with trusted adults or family members. Especially for young people, discussing online safety and potential risks is key to prevention.

If you become a victim of sextortion:

  • Do not give in to demands Paying or sending more images will not make the offender stop.
  • Save evidence: Take screenshots of messages, profiles, and other relevant information.
  • Contact your local law enforcement immediately. You are not alone.
  • Talk to someone you trust. Sextortion can feel isolating, but support from family, friends, or counselors is critical.

Red Deer RCMP urges anyone who may be a victim of sextortion or online exploitation to report it to your local police. Your actions can help stop offenders and prevent others from becoming victims. For incidents within the city of Red Deer, contact Red Deer RCMP at 403-406-2200.
