Red Deer RCMP to hold checkstops throughout December

Nov 29, 2024 | 9:48 AM

The Red Deer RCMP will be holding checkstops throughout the month of December in an effort to make the roads safer this holiday season.

RCMP officers across the province are asking residents to make smart choices when celebrating with family and friends.

With increased holiday traffic and festivities going on, the RCMP says there’s a rise in impaired driving incidents, which is why checkstops will be held in Alberta through December and New Year’s Day.

“Celebrating responsibly is one of the greatest gifts you can give this holiday season,” said Sergeant Brian Herrick of Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services.

“Choosing not to drive impaired is choosing to protect your life and the lives of everyone around you.”

The RCMP can demand a breath sample from any driver who they’ve lawfully stopped, even if they do not suspect alcohol impairment.

If the driver refuses to take any of the tests, or the investigation finds that the driver is impaired by drugs, alcohol, or both, criminal charges can be laid and the drivers license suspended.

Mandatory alcohol screening became law in Alberta in December 2018.

Tips for a safe holiday season:

  • Plan ahead – Designate a sober driver or use a rideshare or taxi service
  • Host responsibly – Offer guests non-alcoholic drinks and ensure guests have a safe way home
  • Stay vigilant – If you see a driver you suspect is impaired, report it to police
  • Think twice – Impaired driving can have consequences that last a lifetime- injuries, loss of life etc. Don’t risk it, take the responsible choice to keep yourself and others safe.
