Blue spruce tree event returns to Pine Lake Dec. 7

Nov 28, 2024 | 1:28 PM

Pine Lake is once again the place to be this Dec. 7 for the annual Haynes conservation property blue spruce tree event, hosted by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC).

The NCC has been undertaking the task of trying to control the blue spruce species in this area for several years, and does so by seeing that they can repurposed first as Christmas trees.

“At first glance, it might seem unusual for a conservation organization to remove trees. However, this initiative is key to supporting ecological restoration and promoting the natural regeneration of native forests on this property,” explains Jessica Hayes, natural area manager, NCC.

“The trees being removed are non-native blue spruce, planted so densely that they are competing with native white spruce. By joining this effort, volunteers not only contribute to the restoration of local ecosystems, but can also take home a beautiful holiday tree.”

Participants will assist in identifying blue spruce trees, tagging them for removal, cutting them down using hand saws (to be provided), and then wrapping them for transport.

Hayes also clarifies that the blue spruce trees cannot propagate without their roots, so there is no risk when these are taken away for holiday purposes to various places.

Though there are hundreds of these trees, there is a participant cap of 35 people, so register soon.

The event goes from 10-1 on Dec. 7, and you can register on Eventbrite. Detailed directions will be provided after registration.

Light to moderate fitness is required; there is uneven terrain and no toilets; as well, tools, snacks and water will be provided by NCC on-site.

Also of note, on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 11-2, trees will be available by donation at the front of the Kerry Wood Nature Centre in Red Deer. The number of trees available on Dec. 8 will depend on the turnout of volunteers on Dec. 7.
