The Outreach Centre’s annual “Walk a Mile in HER Shoes” event officially raised about $58,000 thanks to a matching donation of $30,000 presented by the Zukiwsky Group of Scotia Wealth Management on November 27.

This year, the fundraiser and domestic violence awareness event took place on September 18 and more than 80 people showed up to strap on some heels and do laps downtown.

Dustin Moore, events and fund development for The Outreach Centre, said about $30,000 was raised that day, which Scotia Wealth and its Scotiabank partners has opted to match, bringing the total to around $58,000 after expenses.

“Scotia Wealth and Scotiabank have been amazing partners on the event over the last number of years and both Dion and Rachel sit on the Walk a Mile organizing committee as well, so [they] have been a huge part of this event and growing it to what it is now,” said Moore.

Scotia Wealth Investment Associate Rachel Collin said this is the group’s fourth year taking part in the event as a part of the organizing committee.

“The Outreach Centre touches so many different areas of the community and helps so many people, especially ones that are in very difficult situations,” commented Dion Zukiwsky, Branch Manager, Scotia Wealth Management.

“It’s very important that people get involved with it — it doesn’t have to be at a huge level, but just getting involved in any way possible.”

Zukiwsky added that the group has “even bigger things” planned for next year, as they hope to grow the event as they maintain their presenting sponsorship.

Moore highlighted some of the programs this donation will help fund, such as: Julietta’s Place, a second stage shelter for women in children in high risk situations, where they can stay for 18 months; outreach and intake programs for those experiencing domestic violence that help with safety planning, the court process, and more; and the Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART), which partners with AHS to connect with people in-hospital that show signs of domestic violence injuries.
