Local students got a taste of what it takes to be a firemedic.

This week Grade 7 and 8 students in the Red Deer Public Schools’ SportFit program got the opportunity to step into the shoes of Red Deer Emergency Services.

At the Ed Howell Emergency Services training facility, students got to experience the challenges of being a firemedic through a combat challenge.

In the combat challenge, the students were put through a series of high-energy drills that challenged their strength, agility, and teamwork.

More specifically, they participated in multiple simulated scenarios including carrying heavy fire hoses, conducting dummy rescues, and making their way through obstacle courses designed to simulate what emergency responders have to face.

“This partnership between Red Deer Public and Red Deer Emergency Services is a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience hands-on learning, while developing physical skills and mental resilience,” said Dan Lower, Deputy Superintendent, in a media release.

“It’s also an exciting chance for them to understand the commitment and dedication it takes to keep our community safe.”

The unique event not only challenged the students athletic ability but also instilled important values of teamwork, resilience, and respect for community services.

Red Deer Emergency Services were also enthusiastic about the event, looking at it as a way to inspire the next generation and make connections with the community.

“We’re thrilled to have partnered with Red Deer Public Schools in this event,” said Brad Robinson, Chief Training Officer for Red Deer Emergency Services.

“This was a great opportunity for our team to highlight the hard work involved in being a first responder, and we enjoyed seeing the enthusiasm of these students as they gained hands-on experience, learned about working under pressure, and the importance of operating cohesively as a team.”
