Lacombe looks to attract filmmakers to city

Nov 26, 2024 | 2:36 PM

Lacombe is hoping to attract more move magicians to the city.

This week, city council approved a new Film Policy with an aim at legislating, promoting and encouraging film production within the community.

The policy, which contains a framework for managing and coordinating such activities, will support industry growth and promote Lacombe as film-friendly.

“Our residents know Lacombe is a scenic, must-see community in Alberta,” Mayor Grant Creasey said.

“By looking to attract film productions, we will showcase our home to the rest of the world. This Policy clarifies our commitment to supporting the film industry, potentially attracting economic development, tourism, and the entertainment industry to Lacombe.”

According to the city, the new policy was crafted with input from film industry experts, including Alberta Film and the Red Deer Polytechnic Film Department. It also complements existing legislation such as the Community Standards Bylaw and Traffic Bylaw.

To date, there have not been any significant film production in Lacombe, however students from RDP have shown interest.

The city says the policy is designed for filmmakers, not just large Hollywood-style productions.
