Alberta Gov’t launches info site on upcoming auto insurance changes

You can learn more about the upcoming changes to Alberta’s auto insurance system.

On Thursday, November 21, Premier Danielle Smith announced major reforms to the system that she says will help to save drivers up to $400 per year on their premiums.

Now, the province has launched a new website aimed at giving people more information.

Finance Minister Nate Horner says it helps to explain how the new system will provide better and faster income support benefits for those who have been in collisions.

“We’re ensuring Albertans will save money on their auto insurance when the new Care-First system is implemented, and we want to provide them with the information they need on how their benefits are going to be increased and delivered faster,” says Horner.

Last week’s announcement has been controversial as some have argued that it would actually make auto insurance more expensive and give Albertans less control.

Under the new system, car accident victims in most cases won’t be able to sue the party responsible for their injury and, instead, insurers would pay compensation at rates set by the government.

Until the new model kicks in in January 2027, insurers will be allowed to raise rates for good drivers up to 7.5 per cent each year, starting in January 2025.
