Red Deer Catholic ‘Ment-To-Matter’ program expands to Sylvan Lake

The Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools Ment-To-Matter Program has expanded to more schools in Sylvan Lake.

The mentorship initiative began last year at École Mother Teresa Catholic School (EMTS), in partnership with Sylvan Lake Family and Community Support Services (FCSS).

Entering its second year, they’ve expanded to include Grade 4 students from École Our Lady of the Rosary School (EOLRS) with Grade 9 mentors from EMTS.

In total, 40 students are participating in the Ment-To-Matter program including 20 Grade 4 students from EOLRS and 20 Grade 9 mentors from EMTS.

The program is meant to create positive relationships and build up self-esteem and self-confidence for everyone involved.

To do this, students go through planned games and activities including team-building games, crafts, and outdoor activities. They hope the program gives older students leadership skills while providing the younger students with a strong sense of connection.

Since Oct. 17, Grade 9 mentors have travelled to EOLRS every Thursday during the lunch/recess hour to engage with their Grade 4 mentees and will continue through May 29.

“What I love most about the program is witnessing the positive growth in both the mentees and mentors, particularly their increased self-confidence and self-esteem,” said Lynda Gamroth, a counsellor and teacher at EMTS.

“This program creates a unique opportunity to foster meaningful relationships, allowing younger children to build personal connections while giving older students a chance to develop leadership skills and serve others.”
