Town of Ponoka begins snow and ice operations

Nov 21, 2024 | 1:41 PM

Town of Ponoka crews are busy combating the winter snow and ice conditions following the first major snowfall of the season.

On Thursday, the town announced they’re salting and sanding priority one and two routes, as well as sidewalks along town-owned properties. They’re doing the same to walking trails in town parks and throughout the trail system.

They’re also asking motorists to slow down and drive for winter conditions and report any icy or snow-covered intersection, back alley, or sidewalk by submitting an online request on their website or by phoning the town office at 403-783-4431 where town staff can help fill out the online form for you.

The town is also asking residents to keep their sidewalks that border their property clear of ice and snow, including the section directly in front of their property.

In fact, the town states that clearing the sidewalk of ice and snow within 48 hours after a snowfall is a bylaw requirement. If left unattended, it could result in fines.

When shoveling sidewalks, residents should shovel it onto their own property, not onto the roadways or neighbours’ properties, which is also required by the bylaw.

“By keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, you are helping protect the safety and well-being of your neighbours and fellow citizens in Ponoka,” a release states.

The town snow and ice operations are conducted within the town’s annual snow removal budget, which is based on average winter snowfall conditions over the past 10 years and is approved by town council.
