The Red Deer Rebels announced on Thursday the team has traded goaltender Rhett Stoesser to the Kelowna Rockets.

In return, the Rebels received a fourth-round pick at the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft and a fourth-round pick in 2027.

The 19-year-old from Carstairs, Alta. became the ultimate underdog story when he signed with the Rebels as a free agent after training camp in 2022.

He made 65 career appearances in a Rebels uniform posting a 2.77 goals-against average, .899 save percentage, and a 33-21-2-4 record with five shutouts.

He is also 10th on Red Deer’s all-time wins list and fifth on the team’s all-time shutouts list. In addition, Stoesser was named the WHL Central Division Goaltender of the Year in 2022-23.

Now in need of a goalie, the Rebels have recalled 16-year-old Peyton Shore from the Virden Oil Capitals of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

Shore began the season with the Rebels before he was assigned to the Capitals on Oct. 7.

Through seven appearances, he notched a 2.13 goals-against average and .920 save percentage with a 4-2-0 record and one shutout.

“We want to thank Head Coach and General Manager Tyson Ramsey and the Oil Capitals coaching staff for their understanding and helping Peyton’s development,” Rebels owner and President Brent Sutter said in a media release.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to work with them through the Western Canadian Development Model.”
