Cyanotype Body Prints exhibit coming to Kiwanis Gallery

Nov 20, 2024 | 6:22 AM

Transitions: Cyanotype Body Prints, an exhibit by multi-disciplinary artist and Alberta University of the Arts grad Vivian Smith, is on now at Red Deer’s Kiwanis Gallery.

The exhibit runs from Dec. 3 to Feb. 9 at the gallery which is downstairs at the downtown branch of the Red Deer Public Library.

“Transitions, positive and negative spaces work in tandem to repeatedly depict a body unsupported in space, caught in the act of moving from one location to another and without stable footing. The environment surrounding the bodies is ambiguous – it might be the ocean, a frozen lake, mist, the sky, in – utero, an x-ray, a blast zone etc.,” says Smith in an artist’s statement.

“It is a space where a body once was. Major life events can leave us feeling unsettled and unmoored, floating in an undefined space. While this temporary state is disorienting, it also offers opportunities for transformation and growth, allowing us to gain knowledge and insight.”

Smith earned her BFA with distinction from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2023.

Her work addresses issues such as unpaid labour and mental health; she is currently the secretary for the Elephant Artist Relief Society, which helps other artists experiencing financial distress.

Smith has exhibited at the Leighton Art Centre in Millarville, artsPlace in Canmore, and the Lebel Mansion in Pincher Creek.
