Red Deer sees 93 per cent increase in housing construction in 2024

Alberta has continued its success this month in increasing housing supply in the province.

New monthly data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reinforces that but the government also acknowledges the need for more housing options as the population continues to grow.

The data shows that province-wide, there was an overall 34 per cent increase in houses being built from January to October 2024 compared to the same time frame in 2023. The province has built 37,971 homes compared to 28,313 last year at this time.

The City of Red Deer saw a 93 per cent increase with 327 new homes from the 169 in 2023. In addition, Lethbridge had 624 compared to the 202 last year, which is a 209 per cent increase.

“Alberta is seeing remarkable numbers of new housing starts as our province continues to grow,” said Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services.

“These homes are an investment in Alberta’s future, and we will continue to work with our partners to make sure we continue to increase Alberta’s supply and strengthen our communities for years to come.”

To help get more shovels in the ground, the government launched a new online portal last week called Stop Housing Delays, which is available for developers and municipal authorities to help identify areas that prevent fast and efficient construction.

“The 34 per cent increase in housing starts highlights the strength of Alberta’s housing market and the positive impact of ongoing efforts to reduce construction barriers,” said Scott Fash, CEO, BILD Alberta Association.

“With continued collaboration between industry and government, we’re building the homes Albertans need to thrive. BILD Alberta remains committed to supporting this growth and ensuring a strong, sustainable housing future for the province,” adds Fash.
