Council decision

Red Deer County looking for public input on proposed budget

Nov 13, 2024 | 5:04 PM

Red Deer County is asking for the public’s input on their multi-year budget prior budget approval on Nov. 26.

At council on Tuesday, they put forward a 2025-27 operating budget and a 2025-29 capital plan. The budget paints a picture of pressure on finances, while working to maintain service levels at the projected 3.5 per cent tax increase.

“At $117.9 million, the 2025 budget is the largest in Red Deer County history,” said Mayor Jim Wood in a media release.

“Thanks to partnerships with other levels of government providing 100 per cent funding, the county is undertaking significant public works projects, benefiting the province and this region at our growth areas in Springbrook, Junction 42 and Gasoline Alley. Council is committed to its service levels, and has approved significant infrastructure spending on rural infrastructure benefitting all residents.”

The county says capital spending will increase to $53.4 million, up nearly $8 million from last year’s $45.7 million.

Some of the major projects include the Airport Drive extension to the C&E Trail, the expansion of the Junction 42 Rest Area including a new roundabout at Highway 42 and Junction Drive, and the first phase of the Little Red Deer River Road rehabilitation (Township Road 354).

“Red Deer County is in year two, of a five year plan to increase its operating surplus, so that its capital spending will be fully funded without the use of reserves,” said Corporate Services Director/ Assistant CAO,” Dave Dittrick in a media release.

“Infrastructure investments are continuing to pay off, as seen from the start of construction of a $214 million flour mill in Springbrook.”
