RDP Athletics weekend recap: Nov. 8-10

This past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Cross Country Running team finished in the top 10 at nationals in Ontario. The Kings Hockey team swept the series against the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings. The RDP Queens Hockey team earned two weekend victories.

Here is a summary of the recent results:

CCAA Cross Country Running National Championships | Windsor, Ontario | Sat., Nov. 9

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Cross Country Running team capped off its season with a seventh place finish at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country Running National Championships.

Melissa Ray (25:23.90), a Bachelor of Science in Nursing student, led the Queens and placed 32nd among her peers. Strathmore’s Justine Larson (25:39.00) was 35th. Myah Cota (25:48.00) followed in 36th. Georgia Sawchuk (27:01.50), a Bachelor of Science in Psychology student, ranked 54th. Kammy Park (27:50.80) was 67th . Sylvan Lake’s Zoey Longman (28:41.20) placed 74th .

Cégep Garneau won its third consecutive national women’s team title. Cégep de Sainte-Foy picked up silver. The Mohawk Mountaineers solidified bronze.

The student-athletes on the RDP Cross Country Running team will shift their focus to Indoor Track, which will begin January 25 in Edmonton.

Hockey

RDP Queens at Olds College | Friday, November 8

The third place Queens Hockey team (4W-3L-1 OTL) picked up a 2-1 overtime decision against the fourth seed Broncos (2W-7L-1 OTL) in Olds.

Mia McGregor (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) and Hayley Kolosky (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) scored for the Queens. Goaltender Tora Ward made 26 saves (0.963) for the Polytechnic.

Queens vs. Rattlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, November 9

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (5W-3L-1 OTL) earned a 7-2 victory over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers (1W-6L-1 OTL).

Julie Wagner (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) had two goals for the Queens. Molly Flynn, Addison Longmore, Kaedence Mollin, Kyla Hansel and McGregor added singles. Netminder Izzy Palumbo (Bachelor of Commerce) made eight saves, picking up her second win of the season.

Kings vs. Vikings | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, November 8

The RDP Kings Hockey team (4W-2L- 1 OTL) downed the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings (1W2L-2 OTL) by a 6-3 margin at home.

Nolan Doell scored twice for the Kings. Chase Haygarth, Kasey Hiemstra, Jarod Newell and Tyson Perkins added goals for RDP. Kings goaltender Evan Fradette (Open Studies) turned aside 24 shots.

RDP Kings at University of Alberta – Augustana | Saturday, November 9 | 6 pm

The Kings (5W-2L- 1 OTL) picked up a 5-0 shutout win over the Vikings (1W-3L-2 OTL) in Camrose.

The RDP Kings received goals from five different student-athletes – Ryland McNinch, Doell, Hiemstra, Tanner Sklaruk and Holden Knights. RDP netminder Kristian Lyon (Business Administration – General Management) made 19 saves, earning the shutout.
