Vandalism cause for costly repairs at Sylvan Lake Winter Village

Nov 12, 2024 | 1:33 PM

The Town of Sylvan Lake says vandalism has occurred at its Winter Village venue.

This has resulted in delays, increased costs, and frustration for municipal staff, a bulletin from the town says.

The site is set up at the beachfront and pier area, with preparations having begun in September.

“Over the past few weeks, we’ve had over 11 tree lights cut or dismantled,” says Communications Officer Jared Waldo. “These lights are funded and supported by taxpayers and replacing these lights creates a heavy strain on an already tight budget.”

Replacing the strings also means renting lift equipment, and scheduling staff to handle it, both adding to the costs.

Thankfully, organizers set aside $20,000 at the start of the season for potential repairs.

“It’s going to be a long, expensive winter if we continue replacing the lights on the pier,” adds Waldo.

“We want to ensure that Lakers enjoy this annual experience with their families and friends and they can’t do that if we constantly have to make repairs to the Winter Village.”
