School bus catches fire after collision on Highway 2A, no students on board

Nov 6, 2024 | 1:18 PM

A small school bus caught on fire following a three-vehicle collision Tuesday morning at the intersection of Highway 2A and Township Road 400.

At 7:50 a.m. Blackfalds RCMP received a report of the collision and their investigation revealed a vehicle crossed the road where it was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Mounties say this caused the vehicle to move into oncoming traffic where it was hit by the school bus, which belonged to Aspire Special Needs Resource Centre in Red Deer.

“The bus did not have any students on it but it did have two occupants who suffered minor injuries,” said Alberta RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.

“The bus did start on fire. Ultimately, it was put out and the bus is a total loss.”

The people on the bus were treated and later released from hospital. The drivers of the other two vehicles Savinkoff said, did not have any major injuries.

A statement posted by Aspire Special Needs Resource Centre on Facebook, read, “Please know that there were no children on board at the time and the Aspire staff involved are safe and sound. Be careful out there everyone.”

Aspire is a charitable organization ran by professionals, who work with families, and the community, to provide services to children with special needs.
