RDP announces new diagnostic medical sonography diploma

Nov 5, 2024 | 4:29 PM

Students and future students of Red Deer Polytechnic can now apply to the new Diagnostic Medical Sonography Diploma.

It is the newest health tech program to be offered at RDP and students will gain hands on experience for a rewarding and in-demand career.

“Diagnostic medical sonographers are highly skilled professionals who support patients through the use of specialized ultrasound equipment to create images of the internal body structures that help physicians diagnose and deliver optimal patient care,” said Sheldon Bailey, Associate Dean, School of Health and Wellness in a media release.

“Students will be trained in all the required skills needed to practice as Generalist Sonographers, with particular focus given to the development of effective communication and interpersonal skills needed to deliver ethical, professional, and patient-focused care.”

Students enrolled in the two-year diploma will learn and advance their skills in RDP’s new sonography lab that’s currently under construction as part of the Donald Family Institute of Health Tech Innovation.

Those enrolled will take courses such as general sonography, obstetric and gynecologic sonography, and vascular sonography, while receiving training in ethical and other nontechnical concepts that are relevant to the practice of sonography.

The state-of-the-art lab will also allow students to learn through patient simulations before their clinical practicum placements.

“We are proud to offer a Diagnostic Medical Sonography Diploma program and provide innovative opportunities to educate and train Alberta’s health care professionals,” says Heather Dirks, Acting Dean, School of Health and Wellness.

“Red Deer Polytechnic is committed to offering industry-relevant health tech programming to support the economic and social needs of Alberta and Canada.”

Currently, there are 60 vacant sonography positions across the province as Alberta Health Services is experiencing a critical shortage.

In addition to occupational demand, the number of students interested in studying sonography continues to significantly outweigh the number of current seats available in Alberta.
