TO HONOUR LOVED ONES, MEMORIES

Lacombe high school welders contribute to community project that’s full of heart

Blackfalds residents now have a permanent installation where they can hang locks to honour lost loved ones, pets, or significant memories thanks to students in the École Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School (ÉSLCHS) welding class.

In 2022, Carol Simpson, general manager at the Abbey Centre in Blackfalds, reached out to explore the possibility of a collaboration between the Town and ÉSLCHS. She had a vision for a community project and through numerous discussions and meetings, the project concept was finalized, and work began in the 2023-24 school year.

The ÉSLCHS welding program partnered with Comet Welding, a local Lacombe welding shop, to bring the concept to life. Comet Welding donated materials and handled the forming of two heart-shaped structures.

These materials were then taken to ÉSLCHS, where the welding students, under the guidance of their teacher, Steven Prediger, cut, fit, and welded the final piece.

“This project has been a real testament to the students’ dedication and skill. It’s not often that high school students get the chance to work on something that will be a permanent part of their community, and they really rose to the occasion. From the initial concept to the final welds, they took pride in every step,” said Prediger.

One Grade 12 student led the way with support from four classmates and Prediger. The project was inspired by France’s famous love-lock bridge, the Pont des Arts.

“One of the things I’m most proud of is how the students worked together and supported each other. This wasn’t just an exercise in welding; it was an exercise in teamwork and problem-solving. It’s projects like these that show students what they’re truly capable of,” added Prediger.

To further support and sustain the project, the Heart of Blackfalds Society, a newly formed non-profit organization, has joined as a sponsor. Their mission to promote kindness and love through thoughtful action aligns perfectly with the message of the Love Locks Heart. In partnership with the Heart of Blackfalds Society, locks and hearts for the monument are now available for purchase online.
