The WHL Cup wrapped up in Red Deer on Sunday with Team Alberta winning the gold.

For the second straight year, it was Alberta and Manitoba in the final, with Alberta winning 8-1 this time around. Manitoba took home the title a year ago.

The eventual result of the game, which took place at the Peavey Mart Centrium, was evident fairly quickly as Alberta was up 5-0 by the 11:11 mark of the second.

Manitoba got one back in the waning moments of the second period, but Alberta added three more in the final frame.

Jagger John (Saskatoon Blades) led the way with two goals and one assist, while Kyle Obobaifo (Prince Albert Raiders) notched one goal and two assists.

Per the WHL, with three goals and five assists in five games, Seattle Thunderbirds prospect Brock England, who is a former player with the Red Deer Rebels U15 AAA squad, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. England scored the third goal for Alberta in the final.

This year’s WHL Cup showcased the top 2009-born players from across western Canada. It’s been held every year since 2009, except years where there was a Canada Winter Games.
