Oct 26, 2024 | 9:34 PM

The Red Deer Rebels carried a one-goal lead into the third period but they gave up three unanswered goals in the final five minutes to fall 5-3 on the road.

Rebels captain Ollie Josephson scored nearly a minute and a half into the game on the powerplay but the Hurricanes found the equalizer just over three minutes later off the stick of Brayden Edwards on the man advantage.

At the midway point of the opening frame, defenceman Hunter Mayo hammered in a one-timer from the blue line that beat the goaltender in the top corner.

The Rebels led 2-1 after the first 20 minutes but it was short lived as the Hurricanes scored their second powerplay goal of the game from Leo Braillard nearly six minutes into the second period.

However, with 5:37 to go, Jhett Larson put the Rebels back on top with a shorthanded goal. The 20-year-old forward jumped on a rebound in front of the net after Matthew Gard went in alone.

Red Deer held on to the lead until late in the third period when Miguel Marques scored his third of the year with five minutes left in the game.

Hurricanes forward Kash Andreson gave his team a 4-3 lead just a few minutes later before Marques knocked in an empty-net goal.

Overall, the Rebels were solid on the powerplay scoring two goals on four opportunities. The Hurricanes also scored two powerplay goals on five opportunities.

In his 10th start this season, Rebels goaltender Chase Wutzke made 25 saves on 29 shots. Hurricanes Brady Smith made 23 saves on 26 shots.

With the loss, the Rebels are now tied with the Hurricanes for first in the Central Division with a 7-5-1-0 record and moved back to fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Rebels will return to action next Saturday, Nov. 2 against the Hurricanes at 7 p.m. at the Centrium. They’ll then head to Calgary the next day to take on the Hitmen at 2 p.m.
