This Week in Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics

This week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Cross Country Running teams will vie for medals at the ACAC Cross Country Running Championships. Both Soccer teams will compete at the ACAC Soccer Championships in Grande Prairie.

The RDP Basketball and Volleyball squads will begin the 2024/2025 season.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Rodeo team will compete in Fort Macleod.

The Kings and Queens Hockey teams will hit the ice against the NAIT Ooks.

Here is a summary of the upcoming competition:

ACAC Cross Country Running Championships | St. Mary’s University | Saturday, Oct. 26 | 12 p.m.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens will leverage their exceptional performances throughout the regular season in their quest for medals at the ACAC Cross Country Running Championships in Calgary.

ACAC Women’s Soccer Championship | Northwestern Polytechnic | Oct. 25-27

On Friday, Oct. 25, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team (9-3) will play the host Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves (2-9-1) at 5:30 p.m. The winner of this game will advance to the semi-finals against the first place Concordia University Thunder (11-0-1) on Saturday.

ACAC Men’s Soccer Championship | Northwestern Polytechnic | Oct, 25-27

As the first place team in the ACAC Men’s Soccer South Division, the RDP Kings receive a bye to the semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 5:30 p.m. The Kings (6-2-2) will play the winner between the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks (5-3-2) and Keyano College Huskies (9-1-2).

Volleyball

Queens vs Ambrose University Lions | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Fri., Oct. 25 | 6 p.m.

The RDP Queens Volleyball team will host the Lions in its home opener.

“The goal remains the same every year—be in the hunt for a championship at the end of the season,” says Talbot Walton, RDP Queens Volleyball Head Coach. “We know the journey to get there is long, but I like the way we’re progressing.”

RDP Queens at Ambrose University | Saturday, Oct. 26 | 6 p.m.

The Queens will hit the court against the Lions in Calgary.

Kings vs Ambrose University Lions | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Fri., Oct. 25 | 8 p.m.

The Kings Volleyball team will face the Lions in RDP’s Fas Gas – On The Run Gymnasium. This season, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings have ten returning student-athletes, three first-years and one transfer from the University of Calgary Dinos.

“We had a pre-season record of 4-1, but more importantly, all of our players saw significant court time,” says Aaron Schulha, RDP Kings Volleyball Head Coach. “I really like the team dynamic with this group—the guys are hungry and competitive, but they keep things light and work hard.”

Basketball

Queens at Ambrose University Lions | Friday, Oct. 25 | 6 p.m.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team will challenge the Lions in Calgary to kick off the new campaign. Avery Harrison, Queens Basketball Head Coach, is excited about the team this year, which includes four returning student-athletes, six new recruits and two transfers.

Brandi Thibeaux, one of the transferring student-athletes, previously played for Harrison at Olds College.

“Brandi is just a class act,” says Harrison. “She does so much with the ball—controls the tempo, distributes well and is a true leader. You can see it in her confidence on the court. When Thibeaux has the ball, the whole team feels confident too.”

The RDP Queens will tip-off against the Lions at home.

Kings at Ambrose University Lions | Friday, Oct. 25 | 8 p.m.

The Kings Basketball team will battle against the Lions on the road in its season opening contest.

Seven veterans and five new recruits comprise the 2024/2025 Kings Basketball team.

“The new group of guys is really gelling well together and improving every day,” says Jedell Foster, Kings Basketball Head Coach.

RDP Kings vs Lions | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, Oct. 26 | 8 p.m.

The RDP Kings will wrap up their weekend series against the Lions in Red Deer.

RDP Rodeo

SAIRT Fall Rodeo | Fort Macleod | Oct. 26 – 27

The Red Deer Polytechnic Rodeo team will compete at the Southern Alberta Intercollegiate Rodeo Team (SAIRT) Fall Rodeo in Fort Macleod. SAIRT is an independent rodeo team of student-athletes who attend post-secondary institutions in Calgary, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.

Hockey

Queens at NAIT Ooks | Friday, Oct. 25 | 7 p.m.

The RDP Queens Hockey team (3-2) will play the Ooks (4-0) in Edmonton.

RDP Queens at NAIT | Saturday, Oct. 26 | 2 p.m.

The Queens will wrap up their weekend series against the NAIT Ooks on the road.

Kings vs NAIT Ooks | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, Oct. 25 | 7 p.m.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team (0W-1L-1OTL) will face-off against the NAIT Ooks (0-2) at home.
