Central Alberta High School Football League playoffs begin this week

The Central Alberta High School Football League playoff matchups are set.

On Thursday the postseason will officially begin with the seventh-seeded Stettler Wildcats taking on the sixth-seeded Lacombe Rams at 7 p.m. at MEGlobal Athletic Park in Lacombe.

The winner will face the Camrose Trojans in the consolation final on Nov. 1, in Camrose at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, on Friday, the second-place Hunting Hills Lightning will face the third-place H.J. Cody Lakers at 4:30 p.m. at Setters Place in Red Deer.

Following that game on the same field, the first-place Notre Dame Cougars will go up against the fourth-place Lindsay Thurber Raiders at 7:30 p.m.

The winners will advance to the league championship finals on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 5 p.m. The losers will play in the bronze medal game set to go ahead at 2 p.m., also on Nov. 1.

The Cougars claimed first place in the league standings with a 6-0 record after defeating the Lightning 38-7 last Friday night.

The Lightning finished in second place at 5-1 followed by the Lakers (4-2), Raiders (3-3), Trojans (2-4), Rams (1-5), and Wildcats (0-6).

Cougars runningback Thomas Barrett finished the season with 933 total yards rushing and nine touchdowns. Right behind him was Trojans runningback Devoughn Quijote with 739 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.

Cougars quarterback Natty Thain Liptak led the league with 1,184 yards passing with no interceptions. He completed nearly 57 per cent of his passes.

Lakers quarterback Jace Martins also had 1,065 yards passing and posted a 47.30 per cent completion percentage. Not too far behind was Lightning quarterback Deegan Rutherford who had 1,020 passing yards and connected on 66.36 per cent of his passes.

Rams Lincoln Dmetriuk led the way with 505 yards receiving and also came down with three touchdowns.

Cougars Ben McAuley had 450 yards receiving and added four touchdowns. In addition, Cougars Titus Donovan led all receivers with five touchdowns.
