Red Deer Lions Speed Skating Club to host annual short track meet

Oct 21, 2024 | 10:09 AM

The Red Deer Lions Speed Skating Club is inviting the public to attend its annual short track meet.

The competition, which began in 1953, goes from 9-4 on Nov. 2 at the north rink of the G.H. Dawe Centre.

Kari Klywak, the club’s secretary, says the event is a great one for people to come watch if they’re thinking speed skating could be something they want to take up.

“We also do open try nights during our practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at the Dawe starting at 5:45. It’s not something you see every day,” she says.

“It’s a great sport to be part of.”

Klywak also says things should go a bit smoother in the club’s second year at the Dawe, after moving from their longtime home at the now torn down Kinex Arena.

There’s no admission to attend the event, and Klywak adds the club offers different options to pay for membership.

Though it is relatively inexpensive, she notes.

“It’s a really fun sport and everyone in our club is super inclusive,” she says. “Everybody is happy to be here and make a ton of friends. It’s a very positive and energized environment.”

The club will also hold its Jeremy Wotherspoon long track meet on Jan. 2 at the Great Chief Park oval.
