Alberta government reminds residents about utility options ahead of winter months

As snow begins to fall in certain parts of Alberta, the provincial government reminds residents that from Oct. 15 to April 15, retailers cannot fully disconnect gas or electricity.

This rule also applies to any time during the year when the forecast for the next 24 hours indicates temperatures below zero degrees.

“During Alberta’s harsh winters, no one should be forced to choose between heating and eating. We’re keeping the lights on for the most vulnerable and taking action to lower power bills for all Albertans. I encourage anyone having difficulties with their utility bill to contact the Utilities Consumer Advocate and learn what options are available,” said Nathan Neudorf, minister of affordability and utilities.

The government also reminds Albertans about the Winter Utilities Reconnection program, under which disconnected customers are contacted to help them get reconnected before the cold weather hits. This is led by the Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) in partnership with the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), utility retailers and distributors, and other government agencies.

Albertans having difficulties paying their utility bills, communicating with their retailers, or making manageable payment arrangements are encouraged to contact the UCA.

“The Winter Utilities Reconnection Program is an important protection for customers struggling with utility bills. UCA Mediation Staff are available to help customers get energy utilities reconnected and stay safe during winter. They can be reached at 310-4822,” shared Chris Hunt of the Utilities Consumer Advocate.

Finally, government officials urge Albertans to find the best electricity provider for their needs, as Alberta’s competitive market offers more than 50 retailers to choose from, with a range of fixed or variable contracts available.
