St. Teresa of Avila School marks 40 years

Oct 16, 2024 | 3:56 PM

Red Deer’s St. Teresa of Avila School is celebrating 40 years since it opened its doors.

Located in Glendale, the Pre-K to Grade 5 school has a student population of 370 for 2024-2025, plus a dedicated staff of 68.

Over the years, St. Teresa has expanded its offerings, which have included Early Literacy Intervention, Speech Services, and a Foundations Program.

“For 40 years, St. Teresa of Avila School has been a place where students can develop their full potential in a caring and faith-filled environment,” says Principal Dana Pikkert.

“This milestone is a testament to the incredible community of educators, students, and families who have helped shape the school into the special place it is today. We are excited to celebrate this anniversary and look forward to many more years of serving the Glendale community.”

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools notes that the school is named after St. Teresa of Avila, Spain, who is known for her reform of the Carmelite order, and was born in the year 1515.

Known as the patron saint of headaches, and of people ridiculed for their religious faith, St. Teresa has her feast day celebrated on Oct. 15. She is also known for having faced significant health challenges in her own life.

The school continues to raise funds to build a new inclusive playground that will remove barriers, allowing students the opportunity to enjoy a playground that is accessible to all.
