Red Deer RCMP share results of targeted auto theft response

Oct 8, 2024 | 1:24 PM

The Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team (CRT) has released the results of a Targeted Response to Auto Theft (TRAP) operation that it conducted in August.

Mounties say the intent of the operation was to recover stolen vehicles and apprehend those responsible for the thefts.

As a result of the operation:

  • Two stolen vehicles were recovered
  • Four vehicles seized/towed
  • 18 new Criminal Code charges laid
  • Six new CDSA possession for the purpose of trafficking charges laid
  • Three new CDSA possession charges laid
  • Four TSA charges
  • One Tobacco Tax Act charge
  • Two arrested for outstanding warrants
  • Seizure of methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine and illegally obtained prescription pills
  • One knife seized
  • One extendable baton seized
  • Two bear spray seized
  • One shotgun seized
  • Ammunition seized
  • Canadian currency seized

Police remind the public that crime prevention is a shared responsibility. Members of the community are asked to:

• Lock up houses, sheds, vehicles and any other property that is easily accessible.

• Never leave running vehicles unlocked. Nearly half of the vehicle thefts in Alberta over the past year have had the keys left inside.

• Take photos and record serial numbers of property.

TRAP was led by the Red Deer RCMP CRT with assistance from the Red Deer RCMP General Investigation Section, General Duty members, Traffic Services, Police Dog Services, Emergency Response Team, Integrated Gang Enforcement Team, and RCMP Air Services.
