Alberta investing in affordable housing repairs

Through budget 2024, the Government of Alberta is investing nearly $121 million over three years into maintenance and repairs for government-owned affordable housing units.

Through the Capital Maintenance Renewal Program, this is expected to address timely and preventative projects like window replacement, roof repairs, and improving interiors to ensure they are up to date and functional for the coming years.

“The Capital Maintenance and Renewal Program is a critical part of keeping government-owned housing units safe and up to date. Like all homes, these buildings need repairs as they age to keep them in good condition and able to continue operating as affordable housing for Albertans,” commented Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services. “A maintenance strategy will help government work with housing operators to ensure we are making the right repairs at the right time.”

Officials say improvements made in 2023-24 resulted in more competitive pricing and reduced vacancy turnarounds from three months to 33 days. They also say the province is continuing to work with housing providers to implement building condition assessments for government housing assets, ensure priority projects receive funding, provide training, and improve internal processes and data collection.

In 2022-23, the government did an external review of the Capital Maintenance Renewal Program to ensure government-owned housing was safe, and to identify ways to improve the program.

A summary of the review’s recommendations can be found online, and the province is now seeking proposals for future-focused maintenance strategies in an effort to improve the program. The request for proposals is open Oct. 7 to Nov. 4.
