19 STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

Roundabout expected to open next week at 19 Street and 40 Avenue

Oct 7, 2024 | 3:24 PM

The City of Red Deer says a major milestone is expected to be reached on the 19 Street Improvement Project next week, as crews should be opening the new roundabout at 19 Street and 40 Avenue.

This is the last major milestone in the project, which has included complete rehabilitation of 19 Street between Gaetz Avenue and Irwin Avenue, the extension of multi-use trails, and the addition of a two-lane roundabout that is expected to improve safety and capacity on one of the city’s busiest roadways.

“This project has been in the making for quite a while and we are excited to be nearing completion,” said Christine Villeneuve, project manager with the City of Red Deer. “It was important to us to complete the project in two years to minimize any impact to nearby residents and businesses and we were successful in doing that.”

Once the roundabout is open, crews will still be onsite to complete the northbound to eastbound turn lane and a few remaining items such as landscaping, but traffic impacts should be minor and all traffic patterns will be available to drivers.

“We are grateful to the community for their patience and understanding as we worked to make this road safer and more efficient for them for years to come,” said Villeneuve. “We know living and working beside a major construction project isn’t easy, but we also know the final results will be worth the temporary inconvenience.”

Although the roundabout is open, drivers are reminded there may still be minor traffic impacts in the area and are asked to slow down and obey all signs. Tips for driving in a roundabout are available on the City’s website. As with all construction projects, this schedule is subject to change. Up to date project information can be found at reddeer.ca/19Street.
