RDES HOLDING OCT. 5 DEMO

Make your smoke alarms work for you this Fire Prevention Week

Oct 4, 2024 | 1:38 PM

Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) will be marking Fire Prevention Week (FPW) with a demonstration on how to properly use, test and replace your home smoke detectors.

FPW officially runs from Oct. 6-12, with this year’s campaign being: “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”

On Oct. 5, Red Deer residents can head to Fire Station #5 (311 Jordan Parkway) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to learn about the technology, plus emergency planning, and other important fire safety practices that can keep you and your family safe in an emergency.

“Properly working smoke alarms can be life-saving, as they give people more time to get out safely during a fire,” said Assistant Fire Marshal Shane Dussault of RDES. “That’s why during Fire Prevention Week, we invite the community to join us at our open house to learn how to correctly install smoke alarms, properly test them, and make a plan for when an alarm sounds.”

RDES will also have emergency vehicles on-site for tours, and there will be a free barbecue lunch available.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 per cent); roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no or non-functioning smoke alarms.

Red Deer Emergency Services offers these smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10-years-old.
