Oct 2, 2024 | 4:59 PM

A fire in the trail system along Taylor Drive, between 43 Street and 32 Street, had to be dealt with Wednesday afternoon.

Red Deer Emergency Services responded around 3:15 p.m.

“We responded to what appears to have been an abandoned fire. It could’ve been an urban encampment,” says Tim Joyce, platoon chief.

“There was some clothing, aerosol cans, and small propane torches that were on fire creating the black smoke. Some shrubs and trees were also on fire.”

The blaze was extinguished within about an hour; no one was injured, nor could anyone be found in the vicinity.

Joyce notes it was a peace officer in the area who called it in to 9-1-1.

“Our message is if you see an unattended fire in the trees, please report it early so that it can be contained sooner,” he says.

Joyce also notes that even with the changing weather, it is still very dry, thus extra caution is necessary.

No structures were damaged and all RDES members were also unharmed in their response. One engine and one brush truck responded.

Joyce adds that the nearby walking trail is open.
