Fire Safety Plans now required for construction, renovation, or demolition sites in Blackfalds

Oct 2, 2024 | 12:21 PM

Effective October 15, 2024, the Blackfalds Fire Department will require Fire Safety Plans for construction, renovation and/or demolition sites with a cost of $5,000 or greater, meant to specifically address fire emergencies.

According to Town officials, this update follows the National Fire Code for Alberta which came into effect in April 2020.

The Town says a $125.00 fee will now be charged for Fire Safety Plans, and will require review and approval. Fire Safety Plans must be submitted at the time of application for construction, demolition, or major alterations.

Officials say Fire Safety Plans will be reviewed by the Fire Department prior to any work (construction or demolition) commencing.

The Town says it is the owner’s responsibility to ensure a fire safety plan is prepared and in place, and that both the permit and plan are posted at the construction site until completion or occupancy has been granted.

Officials say this new requirement is intended to improve the safety of all who access construction sites.
