CIBC Run for the Cure goes Oct. 6 at Bower Ponds

Oct 1, 2024 | 1:28 PM

The 2024 CIBC Run for the Cure goes this Sunday, Oct. 6 at Bower Ponds in Red Deer.

Janet Dixie, local event logistics director, says to sign up for the all-ages run, to volunteer, or simply to make a donation, head to cancer.ca.

“Over the last five years, the Canadian Cancer Society [through this event] has donated $61 million to breast cancer research and to support programs across the country,” says Dixie.

“Percentages are amazing in terms of diagnoses and survival rates for people who are suffering with breast cancer.”

Around 70 people are registered for the Red Deer event, Dixie says, adding that participation usually means something a little different for everyone.

But, she says, almost everyone has that common connection of knowing someone who’s had cancer.

“It definitely hits home for everyone that comes,” she says.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, it’s estimated that in 2024, 30,500 (84/day) Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, which will make up about 25 per cent of all new cancer cases in women this year.

Another 5,500 (15/day) women will die of breast cancer in 2024, or 13 per cent of all cancer deaths involving women.

Notably, 290 Canadian men will also be diagnosed with breast cancer, and an estimated 60 will die.

The event’s opening ceremony is at 9:30 a.m., with the 1 km and 5 km runs getting going at 10. It is pet-friendly, and you can register in-person the day of (starting at 8 a.m.) if you haven’t already done so online.

The CIBC Run for the Cure is also happening in Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat.

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Canada, meaning donations made to breast cancer this month, through this portal, will be matched.
