Chamber members holding National Day for Truth and Reconciliation ceremonies

Sep 26, 2024 | 1:38 PM

The Red Deer and District Chamber invites residents to honour National Day For Truth and Reconciliation by attending its members’ events.

The Red Deer Native Friendship Society is hosting an Honouring the Children Feast and Blanket Exercise on September 30 at Fort Normandeau.

At 9 a.m. there will be a Kairos blanket exercise, an interactive activity that shares the true history of Indigenous people in Canada and at about noon, they will hold a traditional feast to honour the children who never returned home from Residential Schools.

A complimentary shuttle service will be available to transport attendees too and from Fort Normandeau.

The Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery is holding a ceremony and community gathering, also on September 30, to remember the lives of children lost to the Residential Schools.

Ceremony schedule:

  • 11 a.m.: Welcome, opening prayer, and land acknowledgement.
  • 11:15 a.m.: History of TRC Day talk.
  • 11:30 a.m.: Transfer of quilt from Métis local to Native Counselling.
  • 12-3 p.m.: Free barbecue (bannock burgers food truck) and music by Billy Joseph (fiddle and guitar)

For the duration of the event, there will be vendors set up in the green space outside, and a selection of TRC-related films will be running in the Gallery’s Capitol Theatre (Remarkable Red Deer Gathering).
