Sep 25, 2024 | 1:25 PM

The last week of September is filled with events for young students from multiple Red Deer and area school divisions to recognize and reflect on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The commemorative day falls on September 30 annually, and schools have educational activities planned for students starting this week.

In the Red Deer Public Schools Division:

  • Mountview Elementary: From Sept. 25-27, students will learn about the significance of Orange Shirt Day and honour Residential School history. There will also be a school-wide assembly on the Friday.
  • Eastview Middle: On Sept. 27, students will wear orange shirts in an effort to recognize the impact of the Canadian Residential School System.
  • Fairview Elementary: On Sept. 27, staff and students will take part in various learning experiences meant to foster a greater understanding of and importance to Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Students and staff are encouraged to wear orange.
  • All schools: Throughout the division, 11,000 students and 1,500 staff will watch a division-wide video commemorating the day on Sept. 27.

The Chinook’s Edge School Division has prepared a video for schools to use as a part of their students’ learning in the week leading up to the occasion. It showcases the division’s new land acknowledgement statement, which was created last school year with input from students, staff, school board trustees, and most importantly, Indigenous partners.

In the week leading up to September 30, educators will be helping students understand Indigenous history in Canada and consider how we can walk together on the path to reconciliation.

Wolf Creek Public Schools will hold a Round Dance in Ponoka on September 27 at 1 p.m. to mark the occasion. Officials aim to have attendees gather and recognize growth, respect diverse identities, and strive for unity.

Attendees are asked to wear orange and bring their own chairs and blankets if desired. The event takes place in the field behind the BRICK Learning Centre at 5004 54 Street.
