Girls in Aviation Day encourages Red Deer youth to soar

Sep 19, 2024 | 1:52 PM

Girls in Aviation Day, an annual event that aims to spark inspiration and curiosity in the next generation of female aviation professionals, returns to Red Deer on September 21.

Attendance is free, although pre-registration is required. The event is designed for girls aged 8-18 and will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Held at the Red Deer Regional Airport, the event gives participants hands-on experience through engaging STEM activities and one-on-one interactions with industry leaders. They will have the opportunity to explore aircraft up close and connect with over 30 exhibitors representing different sectors of aviation, including flight schools, maintenance, air traffic control, ground operations and more.

These exhibits are expected to offer insights into both the technical and operational sides of the industry, showcasing career paths from piloting and engineering to aviation management and airport operations.

“We’re excited to open our doors and give young women a first-hand look at the limitless possibilities aviation has to offer,” said Ashley Nelson, director of business development and communications at Red Deer Regional Airport. “Girls in Aviation Day is all about inspiring and empowering future aviators by providing access to resources, mentorship, and experiences that can ignite their passion for the skies.”

Participants will also experience a meet-and-greet session with 30 renowned aviation professionals from across Canada who will share their career journeys, provide mentorship and answer questions from the aspiring aviators.

“The Girls In Aviation Day Committee has worked hard to create an environment where young girls can be inspired by both the hands-on activities and the stories shared by accomplished women in the aviation industry. There are endless opportunities within aviation, and we’re here to show them that the sky truly is the limit,” added Nelson.

A new addition to this year’s program is “Elevate Experience!” This offers girls aged 15 and older a tailored session of one-to-one speed mentoring, post-secondary information, and an exploration of advanced career pathways. This will include a take-home package filled with educational and career resources.
