Topsy turvy affair ends Rebels 2024 pre-season

Sep 14, 2024 | 8:18 PM

The Red Deer Rebels will presumably take a few lessons away from the finale of their 2024 pre-season, which was a 6-4 loss to the Edmonton Oil Kings in front of WHL fans in Morinville.

At one point, the Rebels led 4-1, but Edmonton rattled off five unanswered to take the W.

Scoring summary

Beckett Hamilton (3rd) scored at 10:17 of the first to break the ice in Red Deer’s favour, and that is how the opening period ended.

Just 2:45 into the second, Jeramiah Roberts (1st) scored a power play goal to make it 2-0 Red Deer.

Joe Iginla (2nd) got one back just 10 seconds later, however, and it looked like it was anyone’s game.

At 5:44, Luke Vlooswyk (1st) scored to make it 3-1 Rebels; then Nickolas Kovich (1st) dug the Oil Kings’ hole deeper at 15:37.

But then the tide turned.

Only 1:09 after Kovich’s marker, Edmonton’s Presley Kerner (1st) cut the lead to 4-2 at 16:46.

Kerner (2nd) then scored again 47 seconds after that at 17:33; and Gavin Hodnett (1st) notched the equalizer at 18:51.

After 40 minutes, it was 4-4, and indeed was anyone’s game.

The momentum gathered by the Oil Kings was too much for Red Deer in the third.

Joe Iginla (3rd) scored a power play goal, the eventual game-winner, at 9:32, and then Jack Toogood (2nd) put one into the empty net with one second on the clock.

Final: 6-4 Edmonton.

Peyton Shore took the L in net for Red Deer, making 34 saves. Alex Worthington and Parker Snell shared the net for Edmonton.
