Alberta government announces Canada’s first industrial-scale waste-to-energy facility

Sep 11, 2024 | 3:59 PM

The Alberta government has announced two-point-eight million dollars in funding toward a plant that would turn landfill waste into electricity, and capture the carbon it creates.

The money is to go toward a six-million-dollar engineering and design study for a project planned by Varme Energy in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland near Edmonton.

Varme expects operations will begin in 2027 and that the plant would be able to capture and store about 185-thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
