Beginning Sept. 16, 2024

Updated road closure date for hospital parkade work

Sep 10, 2024 | 5:13 PM

A temporary road closure scheduled to begin Sept. 10, 2024, has been postponed to next Monday as work to expand the parkade at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre continues.

Beginning September 16, officials with Alberta Health Services (AHS), say 39 St. will be closed between 52 Ave. and 51 Ave. directly south of the parkade. The parkade exit onto 39 St. will also be closed during this time, with pedestrian traffic being redirected around the parkade to the east and west.

AHS says the closure is necessary to accommodate the delivery and installation of additional precast concrete needed to form the parkade’s new levels. Officials say the slight delay is a result of a logistical issue with moving a crane.

City of Red Deer transit stops along the impacted section of 39 St. will be temporarily relocated to the west. AHS says signage will direct users to alternate stops.

The street closure will also require changes to the access of the 39 St. parking lot for AHS staff and volunteers who are registered to park there. AHS says a temporary entrance and exit will be established to the east, off of 51 Ave.

AHS says it will be working closely with its contractors to minimize the traffic impacts wherever possible for patients, staff and neighbouring residents.

The closure is expected to last until mid-November.

The health agency says detour signage will be in place to direct traffic during this work. Motorists are asked to please slow down when approaching or driving in the construction areas and to obey all posted signs and personnel directing traffic. Pedestrians are also asked to please keep to posted sidewalks for their safety around construction traffic.

AHS says construction timelines and project updates will continue to be posted online at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre Parkade Expansion | Together 4 Health (albertahealthservices.ca).
