July 2024 Incident

Short jail term for alleged property crime offender

Sep 4, 2024 | 3:30 PM

One of two individuals arrested in connection to local property crime offences this summer received a small jail term last month.

Randy Lee Soule, 42, of no fixed address, pled guilty to counts of fail to comply with a release order, and intent to avoid arrest on Aug. 15, 2024, and was sentenced to three days in jail for each count, to be served concurrently.

Meanwhile, co-accused Patrick Carson Raycraft, 61, of Red Deer, had his charges withdrawn. According to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS), Raycraft’s charges were withdrawn as there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction.

It was on July 10, 2024, when Innisfail RCMP officers were patrolling the town of Penhold and noticed a red van towing a utility trailer parked behind a home with residents known to participate in property crime. Mounties say the license plate of the trailer was determined to be stolen from Calgary.

Officers say they observed a large amount of cut cables and copper wiring, as well as tools associated with break-ins in the back of the trailer when they approached the vehicle to address the three people within.

Mounties say the driver was arrested, however at first, the passenger provided a false identity. Another officer arrived on-scene and identified the passenger as someone with multiple warrants out for their arrest. They were also arrested.

Officers searched the vehicle and allegedly found numerous break-in tools, including bolt cutters, pry bars, and binoculars. They also located six grams of suspected fentanyl and seven grams of suspected methamphetamine. RCMP say the weight of the insulated wire was 355 pounds.

Patrick Raycraft was charged with:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, two counts
  • Possession of break in instruments
  • Possession of Controlled Substance – Methamphetamine
  • Possession of Controlled Substance – Fentanyl
  • Possession of unstamped Tobacco

Randy Soule was charged with:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, two counts
  • Possession of break in instruments
  • Possession of Controlled Substance – Methamphetamine
  • Possession of Controlled Substance – Fentanyl
  • Excise Act – Possession of unstamped Tobacco
  • Breach of Conditions, three counts
  • Obstruction

According to RCMP, Soule also had 13 warrants split between the location of Innisfail, Lacombe and Red Deer.
