Red Deer to light up for World Duchenne Awareness Day

Sep 4, 2024 | 8:01 PM

Red Deer is taking part this weekend in a nationwide day to bring attention to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

World Duchenne Awareness Day is Sept. 7, with Red Deer City Hall lighting up red in solidarity.

The disease is rare but relentless, affecting more than 800 boys and young men across Canada. An explainer on the genetics behind Duchenne is at defeatduchenne.com.

“This is why our mission to raise awareness is crucial — for these families, time is muscle,” says Lisa McCoy, CEO of Defeat Duchenne Canada.

“We are working every day to ensure that each child facing a Duchenne diagnosis has a fighting chance through swift access to cutting-edge treatments and care that can preserve their muscles and extend their lives.”

Red Deer City Hall is one of 25 landmarks across Canada taking part this Saturday.

“Each red light this weekend represents our community’s unwavering commitment to those battling Duchenne,” McCoy adds. “It’s a call for access to treatments, earlier diagnoses, better support and care, and increased funding for research.”

All residents of Red Deer and the surrounding communities are encouraged to be a part of this inspiring display of unity by visiting Red Deer City Hall on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. MT.

You can also join the wave of support by decorating your homes, schools, offices, or hospitals in red as a symbol of a brighter future for those affected by Duchenne.
