UPDATE (Sept. 6): RCMP confirm presences in Red Deer this week were due to search for Elijah Blake Strawberry

Red Deer RCMP said at about 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday that they are now clear from the 5100 block of 62 Street in north Red Deer — at Wedgewood Gardens apartment complex behind Village Mall.

“No suspect was located at this time. Police resources will remain in the area during this ongoing operation,” RCMP say in an update.

“We acknowledge that increased police presence can be concerning, [but] there is no immediate concern for public safety.”

RCMP announced their heavy presence just after 7 a.m. Wednesday morning at the apartment complex, stating they were tracking a suspect.

This all comes just two days after another heavy police presence in north Red Deer, just a few blocks away in the vicinity of Save-On-Foods and other north end areas. RCMP could not say today’s presence is linked to Sept. 2 or any other ongoing matter.

RCMP ask that people avoid posting photos of responding officers on social media if they see them working.

“A significant number of resources are focused on safely dealing with this incident and on protecting the public, RCMP said this morning. “The RCMP ask that the public remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or tips to the Red Deer RCMP or Crime Stoppers.”

An update will be sent when more information becomes available.
