Red Deer organizations to hold third annual Service Clubs Week

Sep 3, 2024 | 12:53 PM

Red Deer’s three Rotary Clubs, as well as the Lions, Optimists, Kiwanis and Kinsmen, are teaming up again for their third annual Service Clubs Week.

The campaign runs Sept. 9-14 with several community projects planned.

Each non-profit will receive $1,500 and up to 15 volunteers to assist in completing a project of their choice.

“The motto of the Red Deer Lions is ‘We Serve,'” says Ron Demchuk, spokesperson for Red Deer Service Week.

“The Lions Club International Founder Melvin Jones put it all into perspective with this quote: ‘What if those who are successful because of their drive, intelligence and ambition were to put their talents to work improving their communities?'”

Each service club has chosen a non-profit to support; Optimist is assisting the Cadets with inventory, Rotary of Red Deer is unloading bags of food and doing general cleanup at the Humane Society, Red Deer Lions are assisting Meals on Wheels to deliver meals, Rotary East is doing cleanup at the Hospice, Kinsmen are helping clean up at Aspen Heights Micro-Society, and Kiwanis is painting and general cleanup at Safety City, Demchuk notes.

Official launch will be at City Hall on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. in front of City Hall, with the Mayor proclaiming Service Clubs Week in Red Deer.
