One person dies in drowning on Sylvan Lake

Aug 29, 2024 | 12:59 PM

Sadly, RCMP say one person has died in a drowning incident on Sylvan Lake.

It was around 5:45 p.m. on Aug. 23 when Sylvan Lake RCMP received a report of a capsized boat on the lake, near Norglenwold. The boat was a Sea-Doo Switch Sport pontoon-style boat, police share.

An RCMP boat along with one from Sylvan Lake Fire Department were deployed to assist from the Norglenwold area.

Eight people were rescued from the water; however, the ninth person onboard, a 50-year-old woman, who was not a resident of Canada, was located under the capsized boat. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced deceased.

The deceased was taken to the office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the investigation continues into how the boat capsized, RCMP say.

All individuals on the boat, including the deceased, were wearing life-jackets at the time of the incident. No one else had to go to hospital.

RCMP send their condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.
