LAUNCHING OCTOBER

New notification service and app coming to Ponoka

Aug 28, 2024 | 4:32 PM

Starting in October, the Town of Ponoka will be launching a new notification service that will include an app for smartphone downloads.

This new service is expected to send alerts for utility service disruptions as well as large-scale, local emergencies that may require immediate action from residents for their own safety.

“The Town is providing this new notification service to help ensure that town residents receive critical information quickly about any utility service disruptions that affect their access to utilities such as water and power,” said Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson. “This could include, for example, a planned power outage to conduct electrical maintenance on our electrical system in town; or a watermain break that may require water service along a particular street to be temporarily turned off while repairs are completed.”

Town officials say residents who receive a monthly utility bill will be automatically enrolled to receive these alerts through the primary phone number and address associated with the bill.

Initially, alerts will be delivered via recorded voice calls. After an introductory call in October, residents can choose how to continue receiving alerts. Residents will be able to download the Voyent Alert app to get notifications on their phone, or register online to receive email or text alerts rather than voice calls.

All other residents and visitors will need to subscribe manually in October once the new system is launched, and they will have the same options as listed above. All residents will also have the option to sign up for additional non-emergency alerts of Town updates such as road closures, waste collection reminders, snow and ice control updates, and more.

To ensure the best phone number to receive alerts through is connected to the utility bill, the Town asks residents to update their contact information as soon as possible by calling the Town office at 403-783-4431.
