Experience Red Deer’s arts and culture during Alberta Culture Days

The month of September is Alberta Culture Days, and the City of Red Deer and Red Deer Arts Council have a variety of events in store for residents.

To kick off the month, the City invites residents to City Hall on September 6 to celebrate its newly installed public artworks. From 4:30-6 p.m., there will be refreshments, snacks, and live music. Featured artists include Carol Lynn Gilchrist, Wendy Meeres, and Kyle Thornley.

The Red Deer Arts Council is hosting weekly activities as well as month-long offerings.

Throughout September, the following events will be running:

  • “You Must Remember This” Art Exhibition: Held at the Red Deer Arts Council Community Gallery, this exhibit showcases original literary and visual artworks. There will be a First Fridays opening ceremony for the exhibition on September 6, from 5-7 p.m.
  • MAG Saturdays: Each Saturday throughout the month, all ages are invited to the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery (MAG) to engage in the creative process and create a piece of art.
  • miniMAG: Each Monday throughout September from 9:30-11 a.m., the MAG will be hosting a drop-in program for children ages 3-5 to create an art project.
  • MAGsparks: Each Monday throughout September from 1-2:30 p.m., the MAG will host a multimedia art program, open to all, and geared towards persons with disabilities.
  • Yoga in the Square: Each Tuesday in September, there will be free yoga classes led by Love Yoga Grace at the Canada 150 Square. Sessions will be held in th Love Yoga Grace Studio in the event of poor weather.
  • Other activities like the Art Speaks Learning Series, Making Art History, History in the PM, and the MAG’s Walking Tours will also be offered FREE during the month of September.

Events specific to week one include:

  • Sounds Like Sunday Music Series: Kick off the month on September 1 with an outdoor show featuring Shalaine Stebner Trio from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Canada 150 Square.
  • Outdoor Drum Circle: September 3 from 6-8 p.m. in the Capstone 150 Square; Drums are provided and participants will be guided by a drum leader.
  • Capstone Cabaret: On September 6 enjoy an outdoor concert by Taylor Drive from 7-9:30 p.m.
  • Nowegian Laft Haus: September 7 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., learn about Red Deer’s Norwegian history.
  • Red Deer Cultural Heritage Festival: Moved to October 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., experience vikings, powwow, music, and more in Heritage Square.

Week two activities will feature:

  • Just Dance! It’s really gonna be okay: From 4:30-5:30 p.m. on September 9, head to the Culture Services building to dip your toe into dance.
  • Art is Try – Artistry!: On September 9, Culture Services will also be hosting an acrylic painting sampler. All ages are welcome for the 4:30-5:30 p.m. session, and the 5:30-6:30 p.m. slot is ages 16 and up only.
  • Brave New Worlds – Open Stage for Writers: From 7-9 p.m. on September 10, the Red Deer Arts Council Community Gallery will hold an open mic night, with no prior skills required.
  • “Be ARTventurous” Scooter Tour: On September 12 starting at 5 p.m., this adult-oriented scooter tour will take participants to murals, galleries, and snack hotspots downtown. Those hoping to scooter must pre-register with the Downtown Business Association as there are limited spots available.
  • Capstone Night Market: On September 13 from 5-9:30 p.m., head to the Capstone 150 Square for a pop-up, urban night market.

Events to be held in week three include:

  • Sounds Like Sunday Music Series: At Canada 150 Square on September 15 head to an outdoor show featuring the Central Alberta Chamber Orchestra from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Concert in the Park: On September 17 at 7 p.m., join local musicians for a pop-up concert in Heritage Square.
  • Intro to Improvisation with Bull Skit Comedy: From 6:30-9 p.m. on September 18, Scott Block Theatre will hosts a low stakes improvisation class.
  • Capstone Cabaret: Enjoy an outdoor concert by the Mike Roland Band on September 20 from 7-9:30 p.m.
  • Lindy Hop Dance Workshop: Dance your way to the Snell Auditorium at the Red Deer Public Library – Downtown Branch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on September 21.
  • Pemmican Making Workshop: On September 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., learn how to make pemmican from local Kokoms at Fort Normandeau. Call 403-346-2010 to register space is limited.
  • Open Studio Tour: Take this self-guided tour on September 21 or 22 to tour 20 local artist’s studios. A map and brochure should be available here once it is closer to the event.
  • Sounds Like Sunday Music Series: At Canada 150 Square on September 22 head to an outdoor show featuring the Overdue Blues Band from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Local Author Fair: Connect with local authors from 10:30 a.m. to to 2:30 p.m. on September 22.
  • Writing Workshop with Leslie Green: Titled, “Conflict, chaos, and your nemesis,” join former Red Deerian and author Greentree at the Local Author Fair from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for a lesson in writing conflict. Register here as spots are limited.
  • Re Think Red Deer Garlic Festival and Market: On September 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., head to the Common Ground Garden in Capstone to indulge in local harvests and a garlic themed art show.
  • Common Ground Garden Project Harvest Dinner: Held at the Common Ground Garden in Capstone on September 22 from 5-8 p.m.
  • Tweed and Tassel Tour – Fancy Women Bike Ride Tweed Edition: Starting and ending at the Red Deer Public Library – Collicutt Branch, from 12-2 p.m. join riders in their finest vintage attire as they ride through the city.

The final and fourth week will include these events:

  • Multicultural Market: On September 27 from 4-8 p.m., Festival Hall will hold a market featuring arts and crafts from local Canadian and international artists.
  • CATENA Season Preview: On September 28, head to the Red Deer Memorial Centre for a 7 p.m. curtain call to get a preview of the Central Alberta Theatre 2024-25 season.
  • Mad Hatter Tea: From 12-2 p.m. on September 29, join Bull Skit performers at the Red Deer Public Library – Dawe Branch a they bring to life characters from Alice in Wonderland.
  • Sounds Like Sunday Music Series: At Canada 150 Square on September 29 head to an outdoor show featuring The McKee 3 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
