Innisfail man arrested after second assault incident

Innisfail RCMP have arrested a suspect for a second time after breaching the release conditions of his first arrest.

On August 17, police say they were called to assist with a dispute, where a suspect had assaulted a victim by punching him. The suspect was arrested for assault and released with conditions.

On August 20, the suspect allegedly returned to the same property as the first incident, which went against his release conditions.

Innisfail RCMP reported that when they got to the property, the suspect yelled and threatened to assault them if they entered the residence. Police obtained a warrant and unsuccessfully tried to negotiate a surrender.

Police say they breached the door and the suspect then allegedly attempted to spear the officers with a sharpened hockey stick and threw human feces at them. In response, they used pepper spray and a Taser on the suspect, which were ineffective.

The suspect barricaded himself in the bathroom, where police deployed CS gas, and the suspect surrendered without further incident.

Keenan Joseph Sziva, 29, of Innisfail, has been charged with the following:

  • Assault
  • Breach of release conditions
  • Assault police officer with a weapon (x4)

Sziva was held for a Judicial Interim Release hearing where he was remanded into custody to appear on Aug. 27, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.
