Parkinson’s fundraiser walks its way to Red Deer

Aug 19, 2024 | 12:48 PM

The Parkinson Association of Alberta’s (PAA) annual Step ‘n Stride will roll through Red Deer on September 7, kicking off with activities in Capstone’s Canada 150 Square.

The event will start with coffee and treats before participants head to the start line to walk either one, three, or five kilometres.

Afterwards, there will be a barbecue, music, games, and prizes.

The annual event is a fundraiser for the association and their efforts to aid those with Parkinson’s disease, which officials say impacts more than 10,000 Albertans. This fundraiser walks through nine Alberta communities, and Yellowknife, N.W.T., throughout September.

This year’s theme is “Unshakeable,” as those with Parkinson’s, or close to those with the disease, are unshakeable in their resilience and support.

In 2023, the event raised more than $360,000 for those with Parkinson’s disease, and this year the goal is $400,000.

As of August 19, $11,616 of Red Deer’s $20,000 goal has been raised. Residents can donate, register to participate, or find more information here.

PAA says its Red Deer region serves the largest land area and the third most clients of the organization.
