Innisfail RCMP rescue suspect who jumped into Dodds Lake

RCMP in Innisfail say a man who jumped into a lake trying to escape arrest by who he thought was a plainclothes officer, and said he would rather drown than go back to jail, was rescued and then arrested by actual police officers.

Police say they were called Thursday evening (Aug. 15) about a suspicious man going through people’s backyards, with the man mistaking one resident for a plainclothes officer and fleeing into Dodds Lake.

They say the man spent at least half an hour in the water before police called for help from the fire department and EMS, and he refused to get on a rescue boat because of what he said were outstanding warrants, though he was found to have none.

Police say the 25-year-old man, a resident of Innisfail, was angry as he had, “done all that for nothing,” and was then arrested because he was on a 24-hour court-ordered curfew.
